Take Aim at the Police Van

Seijun Suzuki’s is a filmmaker whose tendencies lead towards passionate expression rather than direct plotting. This makes his films more likely to make an emotional sense that an intellectual sense. There is something good to be said for that.

It also makes it hard to watch his films as they bounce around from emotion to emotion without regard for the viewer. (Though, it is quiet possible that his films make more sense to his contemporaries and countrymen, meaning that the cultural relevance might have a greater impact on how the story unfolds than I know.)

Take Aim at the Police Van is an early entry into the filmic world of Sukuzi, but it shares some of the same hallmarks of his later work – style over substance, emotion over plotting.

The film really is only for the dedicated Suzuki fans.
